Anyone who has seen the film starring Robin Williams, knows what a heartwarming story Mrs Doubtfire is.
Could this musical possibly compare? Oh Dearies – it certainly can!
Leading this impressive cast is Gabriel Vick as Daniel Hillard. Vick is a man of many voices and with impressive stage presence, exquisite comedy timing and the stamina and energy necessary to deliver this role, he embodies the heart of Williams while making the role his own.
There was so much to love about this production, and in particular we loved the coupling of Frank Hilliard played by Cameron Blakely and Andre Mayem from Marcus Collins. There was so much to like about these actors and they worked so well together. Laura Tebbutt as Miranda Hillard gave us an emotional portrayal of the hard-working mother trying to look after her children under trying circumstances without becoming the villain of the piece.
Another strong performance came from Matthew Goodgame as Stuart Dunmire, he oozed confidence and stage presence with some lovely vocals as well.
The children were played by Charlotte Fleming as Lydia Hillard and for this performance the role of Christopher was played by Thommy Bailey Vine and Natalie by Ellemie Shivers. All three worked well together and gave compelling performances.
The whole company gave a slick production with sharp choreography and great delivery. Stand out numbers were ‘Make me a Woman’, ‘He lied to me’ and ‘Easy Peasy’.
In fact there was nothing that we didn’t like about the production. What we particularly liked was the way the audience were able to see the quick changes that Vick did with the prosthetics and costumes.
If you get the chance to see this production before it ends next year, we wholly recommend it.
