The Mercury Theatre has an outstanding reputation for producing top class entertainment for over 13,000 people in Colchester and the surrounding area. Under the “Made in Colchester” brand, the Mercury creates theatre which reaches audiences and generates critical attention regionally and nationally. The Mercury is a champion of regional arts, both as an active co-producer with other venues and companies and also touring our own productions to audiences across the UK.
It has both the main auditorium and the Studio Theatre which seat a combined total of 586. On-site production and workshop facilities create sets, props and costumes for both for in-house productions and touring companies, including the National Theatre.
Online booking is available through The Mercury Theatre website – http://www.mercurytheatre.co.uk or by phone 01206 573948
How to find us:
Train : We are only an hour from Liverpool Street railway station by train. There are trains every hour to and from London; book your ticket on-line at www.thetrainline.com. Taxis are readily available from outside the station, or you can book a taxi with PDQ Cars (01206 540540).
Walking from the station takes around 20 minutes
Bus: You can get to us using any of the buses to the town centre – visit Traveline South East for up-to-the-minute bus times.
Our closest bus stop is on Head Street (outside the Odeon / Nando’s) – postcode: CO1 1NH.
By Car: follow the brown signs for the Theatre
The nearest car park to the theatre is St Mary’s Car Park (CO3 3AA).
For customers parking in St Mary’s we offer £1.50 car parking (for both evening and matinee performances). Please note there are no longer entrance and exit barriers at the car park. Please note you will need to buy your discounted parking voucher in advance and it must be displayed in your windscreen when parking.
Please allow plenty of time to find a space as car parks do get busy at peak times.
If St Mary’s car park is full you may also park in Middleborough car park with a pre-paid voucher from the theatre.
We have a small amount of disabled parking outside the front of the theatre. This is available to blue badge holders on a first come first served basis.
We do have a lift at the theatre, which is available to wheelchair users and those customers who have trouble climbing stairs. If you are likely to need the lift, please arrive at the theatre in plenty of time as the lift can get busy just before a show. You can find the lift to the right-hand side of our Main Foyer.
Accessible Viewing Area
For customers using wheelchairs, we provide wheelchair spaces, with accompanying seating for a carer or companion. These can now be found in our newly built Accessible Viewing Areas.
Plus, for the first time ever, it is now possible to book wheelchair spaces and companion seats online. We’ll need to enable this facility on your account – call us on 01206 573948 to set this up. Please note there may be some circumstances where it is best to call our friendly Ticket Sales team:
If you need to book additional seats for friends/family close to the wheelchair user
If you are booking more than one wheelchair user space and therefore require more then one companion/carer seat
If you want to book a companion/carer seat for more than one show
During this transition, we would ask for your patience and love to hear any feedback or comments about this new arrangement.
You can find a full list of accessible performances on our website.
We have a cloakroom which can be used for the safe storage of coats, pushchairs and luggage during your visit to the Mercury. It is located in the Main Foyer and can be accessed with the help of one of our staff.
New Assisted Listening System
We have changed our Infra-red system to a brand new Assisted Listening system. We offer the Assisted Listening system (hearing enhancement) for customers with or without hearing aids. These can be booked online, over the phone or in person at the Ticket Sales Desk. The Assisted Listening system is available in the Main Theatre and Studio Theatre.
Assisted Listening Headsets can be picked up free of charge from the Cloakroom in the Main Foyer prior to the show.

Food @ the Mercury is our on-site restaurant. To take advantage of our Dinner and a Show Offer, simply add either a two (£13.95) or three course (£15.95) meal to your basket along with your theatre tickets. No need to choose what you are having in advance – simply select from the delicious options available on the night. Please note that Food the Mercury is only open two hours prior to a performance. More information (including menus) is available on the Food @ the Mercury page.
We have a Bar and Kiosk, which opens 1 hour before the start of a show. These serve a range of drinks, snacks and cocktails. Take a look around via our Virtual Tour!
Our Bar is also available to hire for conferences and events.
We have a small gallery space at the theatre which can be used as an exhibiting space or for drinks receptions. The space is also available for hire. The Digby gallery is open to the public from 10am to 6pm Mondays to Saturdays, and later on evenings when there is a performance. Read more.
